I did it! I finally, finally did it! I have always wanted to try a juice cleanse but have honestly been so intimidated and skeptical and so have never given it a go. I know it is definitely one of those “in” things right now, which typically would turn me away from it, but I have done a ton of research on the benefits of doing one so I thought I may as well try it out for myself.
Last week was one of the busiest weeks I have had in a while. On top of that I had one of the WORST stomach aches I have ever had. Usually I am at a loss as to why my stomach is hurting, but I know exactly what triggered it last week. A sweet friend of mine offered to bring in coffee for everyone from Starbucks so I went with a DECAF starbucks double shot. Welp, unbeknown to me, that comes with 4 pumps of classic sweetener. FOUR PUMPS. I drank every last drop, delighted at the “natural sweetness” in the coffee. Guys, I don’t get that much sugar in a week, let alone in a one hour span of time! That night, we also went to get Froyo… and everyone knows I am powerless to say no to that. So alas, bring on the intense four day stomach ache from hell.
So, that being said, it was completely necessary to do a total reset and cleanse my body from those negative toxins. I decided to start my one day cleanse on a Sunday, since it was my slowest day of the week. Now, going 24 hours without a single bite of food was honestly terrifying to me. I eat every couple hours and look forward to every single meal so not eating was not a pleasant thought for me. But after doing it for the first day, I liked it so much I decided to go another day! And let me tell you, I do NOT regret it. In fact, it was the best decision I could have made.
I have been getting a lot of questions on how it went and how I felt during it, so I thought I would answer some of those questions!
First of all, I didn’t even get hungry the first day. It was so much easier than I thought, and I was able to make it through the day without any intense cravings or getting “hangry”. Now, most of my friends were nervous for me to do this because I do NOT handle hanger well… like, at all. But it went so smoothly! I could feel my system cleaning out and having that restart felt so nice. The second day was definitely a little harder on the hunger front. I started to get a little more hunger cravings. This may have something to do with the fact that I was meal prepping for a friend, so was around fresh, delicious smelling food for three hours. I also was craving hot dogs… what the???
I was definitely more tired during these two days than I usually am, and my energy levels were depleted. I took a three hour nap the first day, and an hour nap the second day. Never in my life have I ever taken a three hour nap, but it felt spectacular. My body really needed the rest, and I know it was a huge part in the healing process. I was still able to do light exercise, which was great. The first day I went on a four mile walk, and the second day I did a light yoga class at my studio. I was a little light headed, and by the end of the day I had a headache.
Other than getting slightly hungry and lacking energy, the cleanse was NOT hard to do. If you are thinking about doing one, I would highly recommend. My stomach feels SO much better now. I am not bloated at all, which I haven’t been able to say in so long. I feel incredibly refreshed, energized, and clear minded. In one word I would just say I feel CLEAN. I got so many toxins out of my body and replenished my system with a TON of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and good nutrients. Also a huge plus, is I do not crave sugary, processed foods anymore. All my body wants is good, nutrient rich, whole foods. Salads, fruits, veggies, and good sources of proteins is what I will be focusing on. Not only that, but my portion sizes are reduced because my body can only handle so much at a time now.
To learn more about the benefits of juicing, you can read more here! I did my cleanse through Pressed Juicery, which was amazing and they helped me customize my own cleanse that allowed me to pick juices that were the lowest in sugar and highest in nutrients and gut-healing properties. Now, my digestion is improved, my tummy is happy, and my system is totally detoxified. I will definitely be doing one of these once or twice a year, if not more. If you have any more questions or thoughts, I would love to hear!
Moral of the story though, I would highly, HIGHLY recommend doing this. If you have trouble with your digestion or suffer from endless tummy aches, this may be a great answer for you. But remember, every person is different so listen to your own body and what you need!
