Smoothies are basically my go-to for any meal. I have been eating a smoothie almost every single day since going plant-based, and I have been loving the creative combinations I have been experimenting with! Taking my love for smoothies to the next level, I recently got to “launch” a new line of smoothies at my coffeeshop I work at. I wanted to start incorporating healthier options at our cafe and of course, smoothies were the perfect solution. It was a lot of fun creating and, of course, taste testing several smoothies to offer on the menu. And so far, they have been a huge hit! As for my own personal smoothies, I tend to get a little more exotic, buying more unique ingredients than we offer at the coffeeshop. I have been getting a lot of questions about the recipes for my smoothies, so I am going to start sharing them so everyone can experience the delicious side of smoothies, too! The first smoothie just happens to be one of my all time FAVORITE smoothies I have ever made: Lavender blackberry.
I am super excited about this incredible smoothie for several reasons. First, and most importantly, I have been searching for a good culinary lavender for months and months now. I have a serious obsession for all things lavender so I could not WAIT to get my hands on some of this delicious goodness! Of all the places I looked, I finally found it as I was walking through Pike’s Place Market in Seattle when I was home for my sister’s wedding. I undoubtedly shocked the poor old lady running the lavender booth with my outburst of excitement. But I quickly snatched some up, and have since been using it in everything: oatmeal, chia pudding, smoothies, and even sprinkling it on my salads… there’s just never enough lavender.
I am also excited about this because I bought most of the ingredients fresh and local. I stopped by my favorite fruit stand in the North Shore and stocked up on all the freshest of goodies. The mangos and papayas I bought from the stand were some of the best I have ever had! Tasted better than candy, and complimented this bowl so nicely! So fresh and so delicious!
Bananas are the absolute key to any good, creamy smoothie. I use it as the base in almost every single smoothie I make. I typically buy two bushels of bananas a week, and freeze one of them for smoothies. I add 1-2 bananas per smoothie, depending on the consistency I am looking for. I like super thick, creamy smoothies, so the more bananas the better–in my opinion!
Also, I always add something green. My favorites are spinach and kale. Spinach is a milder flavor that hides itself pretty well behind all the fruity excitement of my main ingredients. Kale is a little bit bolder, but if you like the earthy flavor, then it adds the perfect amount to any smoothie. I like mixing my smoothies with veggies because my smoothies act as a meal and I like to get my veggies in during every single meal. I don’t want to miss out on key nutrients!
- 1-2 cups frozen organice blackberries
- 1 frozen banana
- 3 pinches culinary lavender
- 1 cup spinach
- 2 tablespoons flax seeds
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
- ¼ lemon
- 1 scoop vanilla vega protein powder (optional)
- Water (or liquid of choice)
- Blend all ingredients together in high power blender until smooth and creamy.
- Top your bowl with goodies of choice! Here I topped the bowl with fresh papayas, mangos, apple bananas, shredded coconut, and organic gluten-free hemp granola!
I use water for my liquid because I am a firm believer that the flavors speak for themselves (and as an added bonus, calories saved)! Add as much liquid for your desired consistency. Personally, I use as little as possible because, like I said, I like it really thick and creamy.
I hope you enjoy this as much as I did! xoxo, tessajean.
